North Devon Students Experience the Real NHS

Aug 23, 2010

During the 12th – 16th July the Northern Devon Healthcare Trust ran an organised programme to enable Year 10 students from Bideford College, Park Community School, Braunton School, Holsworthy College and Great Torrington School to name a few, to experience the NHS at first hand.

During the week the students heard from most professions from Medical Records to Senior Consultants about their role in the NHS and what the students need to do to qualify for these positions.  They were then able to work in clinical placements, observing out-patient clinics on working on the Wards shadowing the Juniors Drs.

I feel the week was a great success as it has given the students an excellent insight into the nursing profession.

A great week of activities which gave us an insight into the day to day running of a hospital and a last minute chance to confirm my career choice as a health care profession.

It was an amazing opportunity to really see that happens within the hospital.  No one shied away from showing us the bad cases so it gave us a true insight.

I had a brilliant week which is thanks to Gail Richards.  I am glad I got to do a weeks work experience at North Devon Hospital.  I would hope that other Year 10s get a chance to do it and that they would have a brilliant time like me.

It was really good, we didn’t just get to see the medical side of the hospital, we saw patient transport, IT, Recruitment – everything.  We got ID badges and scrubs! I feel like a proper doctor now.
