STEM activities, an Ambassadors view

Jul 10, 2010

My role as a STEM Ambassador means assisting with various schools events. Events like the ‘Wind Turbine Challenge’, where groups of students have to design and build a small operational turbine in a competitive environment with cost sensitive constraints, are designed to raise awareness of STEM, & encourage future study paths/careers in STEM careers.

I decided to become a STEM Ambassador because I believe passionately that this country needs engineering excellence & innovation to generate new products and businesses in order to achieve the required growth in wealth, prosperity and job opportunities.

In meeting students I endeavor to paint an exciting picture of opportunity and ‘job satisfaction’ through my own study & subsequent career path. At every opportunity I ‘wave the flag’ for STEM and advise of local industries which offer career prospects.

In general I find students tackle the challenges well, are prepared to listen to advice, and are questioning about my experience and their own opportunities. Thus, being a STEM Ambassador brings satisfaction that my knowledge and experience can be channeled in a useful purpose towards a better future for young people.
