Cornish Nuffield Student Glows at The University of Bristol

Jan 3, 2012

A student from the South West was so highly regarded for the work they undertook at their Nuffield placement during the summer, her placement provider took the time to write the below on their experiences and the experience and knowledge the Nuffield student gained.

She attended the lab-group meetings and talks, participated in discussions and discussed with Professors here about what to study.

Everyone here liked her very much and her knowledge and ability to think about scientific problems and come up with a solution are unusual for her age.

The subject I did choose for her was really tough and she had to think a lot, she learned the newest 3D visualization computer programs and achieved a nice reconstruction of a brain of a fossil jawless fish.

More important is that she discovered problems in the reconstruction method and solved them by herself and improved the method for the

Professor Philip Donoghue who co-supervised her here with me even mentioned her work already at a conference and presented the reconstruction she made. Her work is a pilot project for further studies and hopefully a master-project next year.

Thanks a lot again, I am sure that the support from Nuffield helped her a lot in finding the right subject for her studies, it helped us incredibly testing the method of visualizing 3D data of grinding-sections of some of the first vertebrate brains.
