Nuffield Bursary Student and Parent Praise

Nov 9, 2011

For my bursary project I designed an antenna. This was a really amazing experience as I had the opportunity to work in a research team.

I had a great time during my bursary and learnt loads. During the summer I worked at Exeter University in the physics department. The aim of my project was to design and test a TE antenna-. This type of antenna produces a specific type of electromagnetic wave. I started by building a computer model. This was really interesting as I used a complex scientific program to calculate dimensions of my antenna. I collected data based on this model that allowed me to make the antenna. Once I had assembled the antenna I undertook an experiment to determine which system would produce the highest intensity signal. I changed the material the antenna was transmitting over and the orientation of the antenna. To measure the signal I used a VNA, a machine that measured electromagnetic signals. I particularly enjoyed this as it allowed me to work with university level equipment. I then analysed the data, indicating any differences between the model and experimental results.

My bursary was an enjoyable experience, as well as providing me with an insight into higher education, and helping me chose a degree course. I am currently completing my UCAS application and a Nuffield bursary is a fantastic project to write about; I really recommend the whole experience!

The Nuffield bursary scheme is great on so many levels.  It provided a real taster of scientific study with motivating people helping out from start to finish.  The organisation was first rate and I felt my daughter was encouraged to challenge herself and gain independence.  It will give her lots of confidence when she starts undergraduate life and has also proved a bonus for UCAS application.  I would recommend anyone to encourage their child to take part in this scheme.
