Behind the Scenes with Michael Caines

Oct 12, 2011
After spending a day at ABode, Exeter on a teachers professional development course, I feel even more passionate about teaching food and developing and nurturing skills of our students.

During the morning, we had various members of the hotel give very informative talks on their role and how students could pursue this career. Some of the jobs were new to me and others had much more involved than I first expected. Just before lunch we had a great game where we had to guess who did what job. 5 members of ABode staff came in and sat in front of 20 sets of eyes, they looked a little nervous as we asked them questions which they could only answer yes, no or maybe. We then had to guess their job whilst they changed into their work clothes. This was really good, and made you think about the types of people who work in this industry and how your perception can be totally wrong. However, I did manage to get 4 out of 5 correct!

After a lovely lunch, we have more games including tasting wine - guessing its type and which food it would go well with, tasting bright green jelly and deciding what flavour it was, and analysing 20 herbs/spices and trying to name them. We finally went on a tour of the hotel rooms, which we all divine. I really wanted to test out the beds as they looked so comfy!!

Apart from having a fun filled day, and learning about the careers available in Hospitality and Catering, I was so bowled over with Michael Caines passion, not only with cooking, but with getting young people in Devon interested in this industry. He talked from the heart and gave up a lot of his time to show how much this meant to him. I thoroughly enjoyed the day, which was topped off by winning the quiz!

Many thanks to everyone who arranged or took part in this very productive and informative day.
