Okehampton College Enterprise Challenge
Over 200 Year 9 students at Okehampton College took part in an exciting new enterprise Challenge which was supported by Ginsters, a very successful well known West Country business. Students were set quite a comprehensive task to design a special Olympic Pasty to give visitors to the 2012 Olympics a taste of Cornwall. Students were briefed by Ginsters staff via a Skype link and several of their staff supported the students during the day via the internet link to give help, advice and technical support when needed.
Business Advisers Laurie Cook, Chris Bourne, Tracy Izod and Ewan Doswell as well as Gwen Clarke from the DEBP, were on hand in the school to help the students with their tasks.
The students had to produce marketing plans as well as design exciting new menus which comply with school meal legislation restricting unhealthy ‘junk’ foods and which supports the 2012 Olympics.
The enterprise co-ordinator at Okehampton College Marc Coton was very appreciative for the support from Ginsters and the business advisers who were on hand in the school.
He said that “The feedback from the students and staff has been very positive and it was only possible with the help and support that everyone provided”.
Overall, it was an excellent day and a fantastic way for the students to learn enterprise skills; how to work as part of a team and how to meet deadlines and produce business data – it raised their self esteem and gave them insight into the real world of work - the students really enjoy working in this way and the work they produced was very good
